Cheapest Online USA Sale InterestPrint Greeting Postcard Flower Wrapping Paper Roll - Pre CDs Vinyl => Rock => Progressive Editorial Reviews The 5-CD Bear Family set barely touches the 1944-46 period when Merle emerged as a brilliant studio guitarist. This CD spotlights those formative years and takes you up to '56, with radio, transcription and film rarities of Merle with the Red River Trio ( The Down South Blues ), Wesley Tuttle ( Born to Lose ), Jimmie Dean ( Boogie Woogie Cowboy ) and more. 29 tracks! Do5 This 2008 release by Canadian instrumental post rock outfit Mahogany Frog is a blast of fresh air in a progressive scene that is really starting to stagnate. The fact that these guys are young makes it all that much more exciting - it suggests to me that the fanbase for progressive might be self-perpetuating.Although the musicians are all very good, I need to single the drummer (Jean-Paul Perron) out. Like the drummer for thunderous post-rock outfit Don Caballero, Jean-Paul is capable of wildly virtuosic playing and, at times, leads the tunes. Odd meters are sprinkled throughout the tracks and the drummer dispenses them with ease. The guitarist is also quite good and although capable of peeling the paint off the wall, he uses clean tones and some fairly intricate playing during the "jazzier" passages.Musically, the tracks on this album alternate passages that feature distorted guitars played at a crushing volume and a bulldozer-like rhythm section with quieter passages closer to ambient electronica. I happen to like this blend a great deal. Indeed, although instrumental, the tracks are fairly interesting due to the variability in dynamics, along with timbre - this is important because there is not a lot of soloing or counterpoint. In fact, the few lead lines played by the keyboardist and the guitarist sound pre-composed. The use of analog synthesizers (Moog, string ensemble etc.) and the Farfisa organ also adds a lot to each track - again, timbre. I like the use of the odd root movements - it reminds me somewhat of mid 1970s Mahavishnu Orchestra or King Crimson. Furthermore, there are some psychedelic passages that remind me somewhat of late 1960s Pink Floyd. Overall, this is pretty eclectic stuff. This album was released as a digipak. The inside cover features a shot of the band playing live, with a closeup of some (very old) keyboards. I am assuming that this is meant to emphasize the instrumental nature of their music. Overall running time is somewhere around 45 minutes. The sound quality is good. All in all, this is a great album by a young group that I found to be very refreshing. The blend of heavy alternative rock and post rock with 1970s progressive and ambient electronica appears to be a viable path for progressive in the 21st century. This album is recommended to adventurous progressive rock fans; fans of Don Caballero; and perhaps some alternative rock fans interested in exploring progressive music.Mahogany Frog bring a new dynamic to the progressive genre - the last twenty years of music! The band is not just another retro pastiche. Sure, the classic references to prog's golden age are inside - the fuzz bass, classic keyboard tones, vintage effects, all of course delivered in exemplary jazz-rock. But the band has also absorbed the best from the more recent genres of post-rock and electronica. In fact, watching them on stage (and of course, listening to this record) is like seeing a good tag-team dj set - the Frog jumps from tone to tone, and instrument to instrument as they tear through the most interesting fusion of music styles this side of the millennium. There's a great balance of composition and experimentation on DO5, as well as technical performance and studio alchemy. D05 is some of the most eclectic listening I've heard in a long, long time. And, yes, it completely rocks! every day, people build businesses on our side. nonprofit organizations raise vital funds.
