SLATIOM High Precision Pointer Display Caliper Thickness Gauge M Discount Up to 80% Large SLATIOM High Precision Pointer Display Caliper Thickness Gauge M Arlington Mall Either I got a batch of rejects or half these reviews are lies. I am no newbie when it comes to making connections and what seemed like a great idea quickly became a waste of money. I am using a Master Appliance Corp: Master Heat Gun with a temperature range of 500F-750F/ 260C-399C and I"m lucky if the solder melts 5% of the time before the tubing is destroyed. This is out on a bench where I can evenly heat around the entire connector, I cant imagine what would happen in a tight area without full 360 degree accessibility. For the one or two that did work it made a tight bond and weatherproof connection, but after multiple failed attempts where I was able to remove the entire ring of solder that hadn't melted, I lost any faith in this product and went back to a soldering iron and heat shrink. Hey at least I got a nice storage case for precut heat shrink out of the deal... Purchased these thinking it would be easier to use these than it would to solder then heat shrink, logic would say that if you can do 2 things at once it is better. Not the case here. First, you place the heat shrink over one side of the wires, then join the wires like you would if you were going to solder them together, after that you slip the heat shrink over the joint with the solder ring over the wires and put them under a heat gun to shrink everything together. I tried 2 different heatguns with the wiring right roughly 1" or less from the exit port of the heatgun where the air would be hottest. The first was a Milwaukee 18v heatgun which I feel is pretty hot, didn't work... it made the connector shrink but didn't melt the solder. The next one was a 120v Milwaukee Variable temp heat gun on the highest setting. This one was able to get the solder to shrink but NOT melt like it should have. The heat shrink started to burn before the solder melted like it was supposed to. I was able to pull the wires apart with my hands after heating them for about 5 minutes with each heatgun.Bottom line, skip over this product and save yourself the time.I read the negative reviews before purchasing these and seems that they were disappointed that the heat shrink burned through when trying to get the solder to melt. I found that the key was regardless of the heating source, which I used a heat gun on low, you need to keep the gun moving around the solder point with constant back and forth motion. DO NOT allow your heat source to stay still directly on the solder or YOU WILL burn through the heat shrink. I found the heat shrink gets thicker as it melts but you can keep the gun within 2-3-inches with no problem with constant motion. It will take patience as it took me around 2-minutes to get the solder to melt. The shell of the solder won't melt completely, but you will see the melting silver solder spreading through the wires through the clear heat shirnk. Great product! This review was changed after doing more tests with the product. My original connections with the solder-shrink failed leading to a bad review. The wires were in the engine bay of my boat and a bit oily. I also pulled on the wires right after making the connection to test if they were good, all failed. After using this again, I found that the heat-shrink tubing insulates the solder, causing it to take a surprisingly long time to cool enough to solidify. If you are having problems making a connection with these, try cleaning any oil from the wires with acetone before use, and definitely let the connection sit for at least five minutes before pulling or applying any stress to the connection. When used this way, I have made a prefect connection every time. The most important thing is to give it enough time to cool before doing a pull-test to check the mechanical quality of the joint. It is surprising how long it takes for the solder to harden when insulated by the shrink. I was skeptical about it. But I was surprised with how strong they hold a connection. Made a loop with 2 connectors on 16g wire, it's as strong as the wire itself. Be careful when getting the solder hot, if you burn a hole in the coating, it will spray out hot solder.. but. All in all, it made a great connection, if done right. It picked up 30 lbs. Easily. (I covered the connector on one, just to see what it would look like heat shrieked in black.) Current flows properly. Definitely better than regular butt connections. I'll be buying more. This solder sleeve works exactly how it is described and kills two birds with one stone of soldering wire as well as sealing the connection. It is a huge timesaver and a necessity for those that don't know how to solder properly. There have been some negative reviews that the plastic melts. This is completely untrue unless you are holding the heat source too long (and not using a claim which I'm sure some people have attempted to do) and trying to melt the metal ring as opposed to just heating the metal ring. I'm sure those that are saying that are trying to melt the metal ring which is not the purpose. You are only supposed to heat it up so that it melts the solder inside and flows into the wire.I took video of the process and will try to upload to YouTube and put a link here. I have attached some photos for you can see the melted Sauter coming out the ends of the metal ring and it is nowhere near melting the plastic. It's a solder joint that is self-sealing and waterproof. I used it with a HF heat gun and nothing could have been easier. I would suggest practicing a couple of time to set how much heat to focus on the solder connection. Once heated to the proper temp, the solder will flow into the wire. Heat the adhesive after the solder connection and rotate the wire for even heating.Did some more butt connections and these really look clean and professional. Low heat is better. Start on the solder connector first, and heat it all around. it will flow and cover the wire completely. then slowly do both end rotating the heal around the whole connector and the cover will shrink uniformly around the wire and seal the ends.
